Location Sorter — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026
Location Sorter is a desktop app by Christos Kavallaris that sorts photos and video clips into folders by where they were taken. This policy covers the app as sold in the Microsoft Store and as downloaded from its website.
The short version
Your photos stay on your computer. There is no account, no tracking, no advertising, and no analytics. The app sends nothing about you or your photos to its author.
What the app reads
The app reads the photos and clips in the folders you choose, including their location (GPS) data, dates and camera information, so that it can group them by place. It writes only where you tell it to: the folders it sorts into, and small files it keeps inside each library folder to remember your places and choices.
What leaves your computer
Only these, and only to do what you asked:
- Map tiles. To draw maps, the app downloads map images from OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org). Those requests reveal which area of the map is being shown.
- Place names. To name a place, the app sends its coordinates (latitude and longitude) to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service (nominatim.openstreetmap.org). To suggest where a place without a location is, it sends that place's name, which may come from one of your folder names, and when you search for an address, the words you typed. It sends no photos and no other information.
- Google Maps. Only when you click "Open in Google Maps", your web browser opens Google Maps with the places of that route.
OpenStreetMap's own privacy policy applies to the first two: https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy. Google's applies to the third.
Content search, which finds photos by what is in them, runs entirely on your computer with a model that ships with the app. Your photos are never sent anywhere to be analysed.
What the app keeps on your computer
- Inside each library folder: the places, names and choices for that library.
- In the app's own data folder: the list of libraries you have opened, report drafts, a route, place names already looked up, the window's size, thumbnails and a search index. In the Microsoft Store version this folder belongs to the app and is removed when you uninstall it. In the downloaded version it is
%LOCALAPPDATA%\PhotoFolderSorter, which you can delete at any time.
Nothing is stored anywhere else, and nothing is shared with anyone.
Children
The app does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date.
